October 7: Blessed Giuseppe Toniolo (SSVP)

Bl. Giuseppe Toniolo was an Italian Catholic layman, husband, father, economist, and member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Born in Treviso in 1845, he became a professor of economics and one of the leading Catholic thinkers on social questions in modern Italy. Rooted in prayer, family life, and service to the poor, Toniolo worked to bring Christian principles into economic, cultural, and political life. He helped form organizations that encouraged lay participation in society, and anticipated key themes of Catholic social teaching. He died in Pisa on October 7, 1918, and was beatified in Rome on April 29, 2012.
