Saint Vincent told the Daughters of Charity, “I’m well aware that sometimes two Rules conflict with one another. The Rule of the order of day calls you to prayer in the morning, and the one for the care of the poor tells you to go to visit them and take them their medicines. What must be done in that case? … holy obedience… requires that you leave prayer to go to serve the poor, as you have so often been taught.
